Dungeons & Dragons Therapy Groups

Play is essential for opening avenues of exploration, experimentation, and growth. It helps us make sense of the world, develop new ways of being, connect with our inner selves, and make new friends along the way.

Unfortunately, stress and trauma can close the gates to this pathway, leaving us feeling disconnected and lost. Finding ways to play, especially as we get older, becomes a quest all of its own.

Dungeons and Dragons Therapy Groups might just be the play your heart and mind are looking for.

The Bard Behind Your Adventure

Jonathan Carr, LPC

Combining a passion for gaming and storytelling with therapeutic skill, Jonathan adds an extra dimension of depth and creativity to the experience of playing D&D. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, Jonathan is prepared to support the individual needs of each participant as they play to engage their goals.

Jonathan will help you create a character and backstory that is specifically designed to facilitate your personal growth. Each session, players are guided in the development of skills and reflections that explore the themes, personal parallels between player and character, the group dynamics, and more. Each session has the potential to deepen awareness and create opportunities for you to activate your values, learn to manage conflict, and support others as you receive support in your goals.

  • Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a roleplaying game (RPG) played by a group of people that want to tell a story together. Participants play as characters that go on adventures in a medieval fantasy setting. Unique to RPGs, there is no pre-determined path or spaces to hop along. Instead, players make choices that affect each part of the story.

A D&D game is led by a player, often times called the Dungeon Master or Game Master (GM), that manages the world of the story. As the GM invites players to decide how their character want to interact with a given situation, dice rolls simulate the unpredictable outcomes when players take a risk. In success and failure, players work together as a story unfolds that challenges the heroes to overcome dangerous villains.

  • As life gets filled with more and more stress and disconnection, D&D Therapy Groups offer a way to slow down, connect with peers, and focus on play that lets us overcome challenges and ask big questions in a non-threatening environment. D&D Therapy Groups allow us to work on a variety of social and emotional goals in a way that is actually fun!

  • No previous experience or materials are necessary! You will be guided by Jonathan through the process of creating a character and learning how to play in a way that helps you work on your individualized goals.

    • Each group is limited to 4-6 players

    • 120 minute sessions, once a week for 10 weeks (excepting holidays)

    • Groups are 'closed' once started; join the waitlist for the next group to secure your spot!

    • Groups are gender inclusive

    • Groups are created for different age groups of players

  • Yes and no.

In-person groups will always meet in-person. Online groups will always meet online. Unfortunately, trying to blend both online and in-person participants tends to decrease the effectiveness of the group.

Request A Free Consultation

A free consultation is required to help ensure that each participant is a good fit for this style of therapy group. During this call, Jonathan will learn more about you, your goals, and help you create a character and backstory that fits with those goals.

This call is also a great opportunity to ask whatever questions you may have and learn more about the therapy options that will best serve you.
